Two weeks ago a customer in Monterrey, N.L. Mexico asked us for a videoconference solution to link his plant in Mexico to his headquarters in Portland, OR., United States of America.

Our customer is using right now at his headquarters BRI ISDN services to videoconference to his plants across the world and using FCIF (352 x 288) Polycom videoconference systems.

Our customer asked for a BRI ISDN FCIF (352 x 288) Polycom videoconference solution.

The first challenge we had was to look for BRI ISDN services where our customer is located in Monterrey. As he is located on Monterrey Suburbs where there are not copper BRI ISDN services. He has a fiber optic link with Telmex and a microwave link with AT&T. We asked to Telmex and AT&T for a local E1 PRI ISDN service.

We found out that if we took this route there were two alternatives for our customer:

The first was to contract an E1 PRI ISDN service just for videoconference and pay a monthly rent for the E1 PRI ISDN and a per minute fee per videoconference call.

The second was to upgrade his existing voice E1 local service to an E1 PRI ISDN service for voice and videoconference. To accomplish this alternative our customer would need to upgrade his existing PBX to accept an E1 PRI ISDN and to provide a BRI ISDN service to his new videoconference system. This would require an investment in hardware and in software on his PBX and pay an increase on his monthly rent for the E1local service to E1 PRI ISDN service upgrade and a per minute fee per videoconference call.

These two alternatives did not look good for our customer.

In order to resolve our first challenge we asked our customer to use his existing IP private network instead of BRI ISDN services. Of course our customer was surprised for our solution as he had in depth doubts about it.

We talked with our customer about the benefits of using his existing IP private network, saving on monthly rent for the E1 PRI ISDN service, saving on a per minute fee per videoconference call, saving by not investing on the hardware and software needed on his PBX, use and optimize his existing IP private network.

He agreed to make a test on his IP private network between his plant in Monterrey and his headquarters in Portland using FCIF (352 x 288) Polycom videoconference systems.

We did yesterday the test using our customer IP private network between Monterrey and Portland. We connected without problems at many speeds between our customer FCIF (352 x 288) Polycom videoconference systems in Portland and our FCIF (352 x 288) Polycom videoconference systems in Monterrey. We watched carefully the bandwidth usage as we were on the videoconference and we did not see the data applications to slow nor did we see to use the total bandwidth that they have available.

Our customer at both ends, Portland and Monterrey, was really surprise and happy to see that we have made work thru his IP private network a FCIF (352 x 288) Polycom videoconference systems.

Once we have answered all our customer questions, we asked him to cut our videoconference call for 5 minutes. We hang and call in 5 minutes from Monterrey to Portland, our customer in Portland immediately after he saw us said “I am glad you have turn on the light now I can see you much better and more in detail”.

This was the moment where the real value we bring to our customers started. We told him that we have not turned on the light, that the light was still the same, that what we had done was to change our FCIF (352 x 288) Polycom videoconference system for our HD (1280 x 720) LifeSize videoconference system.

We told our customer that we could not leave our videoconference meeting without showing him what we consider was the best value for him, which was against ourselves, as we had previously told him about LifeSize high definition videoconference solution and he was fine with his FCIF (352 x 288) Polycom videoconference solution.

Our customer in Portland and Monterrey was really exited to see that there is a very significant difference in audio, video and presentations between our FCIF (352 x 288) Polycom videoconference system and our HD (1280 x 720) LifeSize videoconference system and he thanked us by allowing him to save a lot by using his IP private network and by increasing his videoconference experience by using our HD (1280 x 720) LifeSize videoconference solution.

This coming Monday we will have a videoconference meeting thru internet with our headquarters customer in Portland to define and start the implementation of our HD (1280 x 720) LifeSize videoconference solution for him worldwide using our customer IP private network.
